Signs Never Sleep: Small Business Blog of the Day
by Brian Brown (follow me on Twitter): March 28, 2006I've always thought the ideal company to use the internet would be a small, niche market company that could reach the whole world to promote their unique items. Today's featured website fits this perfectly.
Signs Never Sleep is the blog representing the Lincoln Sign Company of Lincoln, New Hampshire written by J.D. Iles. This is a great blog, and anyone who is considering a blog for their company that creates products should begin here.
What it is
The Lincoln Sign Company makes business signs, mostly for Littleton, NH, but branching out to a much larger audience, thanks to their excellent blog.
Features
Almost daily posts about their day in the shop, making signs. Sound boring? Not at all. The posts are skillfully written and include several photographs. This is the first blog I've seen to include photo galleries in the navigation bar to highlight their work.
Favorite Post
This one shows how gold leafing is done. Again, the photos are what really make the posts interesting.
Gold leaf is exactly what it says it is, very thin "leaves" of gold that have been pounded extremely flat (in fact, they are so thin that if you pick one up and rub it between your fingers, it will actually disappear as it is absorbed into your skin!)
Further Comments
I love that this company blogs because there are so few sign makers in the country. When do you ever think about the thousands of signs you see hanging in little shops all over the country? They had to come from somewhere. And you see exactly where they come from in this blog and realize it's a lot of work to make those signs. The blog helps customers see the craft involved with something I think we see on the street and just take for granted.
I also like that this blog is very focused. Most of the posts are actually about the company and what they do. A few of the posts are about the weather and things unrelated to signs. I like this balance because you learn a lot about the company, and you see the human side, the personal side, which is so important to build a relationship with a customer by humanizing the company.
Also, the blog does have a smattering of self-serving posts where they announce they will be in a certain town on a certain day, and they are blatantly trying to get business. This works for me because the "pitches" are infrequent enough to bother me, and I'm getting so much pleasure from reading the rest of the blog I'm thinking they deserve to sell me occasionally.
Signs Never Sleep strikes the perfect balance between posts that are about the company (frequent), posts that are non-company related (infrequent but humanizing), and posts that are sales pitches (infrequent but effective).
Thanks to my buddy, Michael Martine, for directing me to this blog.
