Small Business Blog of the Day: The World of Flowers
by Brian Brown (follow me on Twitter): March 13, 2006Today's blog was another Google. I was curious who would come up for 'florist blog' and third on the list was The World of Flowers, the blog for the Montreal flower shop, The Flower Pot (Le Pot de Fleurs).
What it is
The Wold of Flowers is an informational blog, most of the entries written to educate visitors about holidays, different flowers, etc.
Features
Relying heavily on other websites for material, the blog requires a minimum commitment to maintain, while creating a useful resource for visitors.
Favorite Post
The shortest post on the site caught my attention because it captured the local culture and how it affected the authors of the blog. The 23-word post is called Car Free Day!

Many of you will be wondering why I chose this blog? There are several areas where The Flower Pot can vastly improve its content and effectiveness with improvements such as:
- more frequent posts (currently only one or two a month)
- more original content
- telling us stories about interesting customers
- adding photos of the employees, shop, and customers
...and those are just for starters. However, even with limited content, The World of Flowers has climbed to the top 3 for Google searches, and its retail website (The Flower Pot) is #1 for the search 'Montreal Florist.' This is no small accomplishment and potentially means thousands of dollars in sales every year. According to the Overture Search tool, 'Montreal Florist' received over 600 searches last month just on Yahoo! (Google is believed to receive more searches than this, while MSN receives slightly less on average).
If you are interested in starting a blog, check out this site for an introduction. Right now, with very few blogs run by companies, it takes very little work to rise to the top. It won't be like this in a couple of years, but those companies that are getting their feet wet now are going to be the ones to adapt later and stay on top.
