Lightning Labels: Small Business Blog of the Day
by Brian Brown (follow me on Twitter): May 31, 2006Thanks in part to another mention on Naked Conversations over the weekend, we're getting a few suggestions from folks who have blogs for their small businesses. One of the suggestions comes from a Denver company that manufactures labels for other small businesses, many of whom have only one employee.
What it is
Lightning Labels Blog describes the label-making process at Lightning Labels in Denver, Colorado. (Ironically, it's storming like crazy outside at this moment...plenty of thunder and lightning) The two month-old blog is written by founder Peter Renton who sold the family label business in 2005 to focus on his new company that uses state-of-the-art labeling equipment and marketing techniques to produce a high-quality, well-received product.
Features
Discussions of different uses for labels...from mailing labels to product labels, examples of products created for clients, and suggestions on making your labels.

Here's one describing how to get a UPC code. What I like about this is the subtle suggestion that the government is perhaps...evil?
"The bar code on most retail products in this country is called a UPC (Universal Product Code), and you obtain them from the Uniform Code Council. You first need to become a member of what is mysteriously called their GS1 US Partner Connections."

Very nice blog. Could use more pictures, but then I say that about most small business blogs. Strangely, Peter's posts all seem to hover at around 200 words. That's a good length, easy to read in a couple of minutes, but a variety of post lengths may appeal to a larger audience.
