Wool Winders: Small Business Blog of the Day
by Brian Brown (follow me on Twitter): May 19, 2006Today's blog comes from a world I know absolutely nothing about: Knitting. I'm a pretty sensitive guy, and I wouldn't be opposed to learning how to knit, but nothing about it has ever stirred any desire in me, despite visiting yarn stores with sisters and friends. And although today's blog is a solid example of a good business blog, I'm still not tempted to exchange my keyboard for a pair of plastic needles.
What it is
Wool Winders is a knitting blog for the store of the same name from Rockville, Maryland. The owners are Jacqui and Lew Rose, but the posts are written by "WoolWinders: A Knitting Salon," so we're only speculating that they are actually the authors of the blog. They list several staff members who could also be contributors.
Features
Information on knitting, yarn, and store activities. This is more a store-specific blog rather than a general blog on knitting.
Favorite Post
Tamara's Blanket contains an item one of the store's customers actually knitted. Using the blog is a great way to recognize the customer and show off a product at the same time.
Further Comments
More pictures! Very few posts in the past couple of months contain pictures and I think using more pictures of things you can knit, or of customers, would really add to this blog.
Another helpful change might be to use more descriptive headlines for the posts. I found myself zipping past posts because the headlines were very vague. It took me a minute to realize that I was skipping the whole post for only this reason without even looking at what was in the post. I think a more descriptive headline would help this.
All in all, this is a very good blog. It's been around for a long time, since Dec '03! It's very personable, does a great job promoting events at the store and has a nice warm feeling to it. The design is pretty good and easy to get around in, though I wish you could view a few more posts before having to go to the archives. Still, this is very minor and it's worth a look as a good business blog example.
