I'm finally caught up on my interviews as of now. Dr. Dan Beatty responded a couple of days ago regarding his unique veterinarian blog. Dr. Dan specializes in holistic methods of treating animals which I happen to find very cool and a great business for a blog. We featured Healthy as a Dog, one of his two vet blogs, last week.
"The blog is a fantastic way to make a connection with your customers..."
Pajama Market: How has the blog impacted your company?
Dr. Dan Beatty: The blog is essential for my company in the internet world. My intentions are to have a large web presence outside of the physical business world, so that I can give all the information I can to as many people as I can - the internet is the best way to do that. The blog is a fantastic way to make a connection with your customers (readership) they get to know you and will allow you to help them and as a benefit they will trust you more and therefore tend to buy products you are selling or recommending more quickly than a total stranger coming to a static website.
PJ: What has the response been from your customers/clients?
DB: My clients in the "real" world love the site and blog. Many of them ask me why I have not posted another story or more pictures or they would like some advice put up there. They keep me motivated to keep posting.
PJ: What types of things about your work day inspire you to write a post on your blog?
DB: My clients! Usually when a concern has been expressed over and over or a feel good moment.
PJ: What have been the biggest surprises with your blog so far?
DB: People in the internet world emailing me about the blog. People that I did not even know were reading. It always interests me to know how did they find my blog (Speaking of that Brian, How did you find my blog?)
PJ: What blogging program do you use for the blog? Did you create this blog yourself? How do you like the program?
DB: I use WordPress, I did create the blog myself with help from a free template. I really do like WordPress. It has all the tools that I need and want.
PJ: Is there anything else you would like to share about your blogging experience?
DB: It is so important that I have four blogs on different topics! All that are topics that I am passionate about. You can check them out - http://creditoptionspreads.com, htttp://www.healingkineticsblog.com, http://www.horsekinetics.com, and http://healthyasadog.com
Technorati is a great source for finding blogs
Thanks again Dr. Dan. I found your blog by using the Technorati blog finder. If you are unfamiliar with Technorati, it is a search engine designed specifically for blogs. There are three distinct types of searches you can do one Technorati. The first is a keyword search, similar to finding something with Google.
The second type of search is a tag search. This limits the search results to blog posts that have the words you are looking for designated as a "tag." (What's a tag? Look at the end of any blog entry on Pajama Market (including this one) to see tags that spell out exactly what this post is about. It's a hands-on approach to helping the Technorati search engine find relevant posts. Tags must be inserted into your blog post in a very specific format outlined by Technorati.)
The final search is the blog search. When you register your blog with Technorati (if you haven't done this yet, do it, it's free and provides tons of traffic), you tell Technorati specifically what your blog is about. This is different than tags because tags are post-specific while the definition of your blog applies to all posts.
As an example, searching for 'veterinarian' produces over 63,000 posts with the word veterinarian. But, if we only search posts that use a tag called 'veterinarian,' we only get 167 posts containing that tag, a significant improvement. Finally, if we're only interested in blogs that have assigned themselves as a 'veterinarian' blog, we limit our search to the blog directory and only 11 appear, Healthy as a Dog being 7th. That's how I found your blog, and many of the blogs I've featured on this site.
