My first impressions of Wisconsin
by Brian Brown (follow me on Twitter): September 9, 2006I found a local (to me) blog that linked to PJ yesterday. The Spring City Chronicle said it would check up on me to see what I think of Wisconsin. Here's a report so far:
It's curious that it has only rained six days in the two months that we've lived here, yet on those six days there have been two tornado watches and a tornado warning. Nothing like that in Vermont.
On the other hand, it seems the average snow fall in Janesville is about 30 inches/year. That should be a nice change. In Vermont, we could see that in a weekend.
It seems when you ask anyone in Janesville for suggestions on things to do, they all suggest going to the Dells. From now on, the question is, "Other than going to the Dells, what would you recommend doing?"
The selection of fast food restaurants is awesome. Our A&W in Vermont closed during the winter...no indoor seating. No Hardees in Vermont either. Best fast food burger I've ever had...though we haven't tried the Culver's Butter Burger yet. Very curious to try it.
Had my first Wisconsin brat (sausage) recently. Excellent. We just got our first bottle of Wisconsin wine. Can't wait to try that.
The Sizzling Grill has the best homemade toast I've ever eaten in my life.
Our neighborhood is fantastic for taking hour-long walks in the evening which Cheryl and I have done about every other night since we've lived here. Other than the one time Cheryl was stung by a hornet, they have all been nice.
We missed the fair, but saw the National Water Skiing Championships, the Labor Day Parade, and Rock Around the Block. We've seen many of the '57 Chevy's during our walks, and have enjoyed the bike paths and parks.
All in all, a pretty nice start to our lives in the Midwest.

I have, indeed, checked back from time to time. I especially enjoyed your posts on blogging dos and don'ts. Other than the Dells? Madison's a lot of fun and has nice restaurants, go west to the Mississippi, north to Door County and you've got one of the world's great cities less than a couple of hours to your southeast. Enjoy.

Thanks Mike. We've only driven through Madison so far. Eventually we'll spend a weekend there. Cheryl has a sister in Chicago so we've been there twice. We'll be sure to take up your other suggestions too.
Cheers.

You're the only person I've ever talked to who thinks the 30 inches of snow we get in Wisconsin is a "little" snow. Very cool! All about perspective, I guess.
Give me a buzz when you want to paint the Brew City with Pajamas and Make It Greatness!
